Long Live Matthew Henson

The other day Larry's second grade class had living museum day. All the students had picked and researced a famous American, someone who had made a difference. They then had to read a biography and/or do research on this person, create a report, dress like the individual, and present to the class as this person.

Larry chose Matthew Henson, the first American to reach the North Pole. Henson was a remarkable person. He was orphaned by an early age and had little to no education. However, he became central to Robert Peary's expedition and exploration of the North Pole. As an African American, Henson was denied credit for being the first person to reach the pole as this honor was bestowed upon Peary. However, Henson reached the summit forty-five minutes prior to Peary.

Larry was outstanding in his portrayal of Henson and we/I are/am very proud of him and his efforts. We even borrowed the jacket from a friend of mine at work to complete his look. Congratulations, "Larry"!
